Ductless split systems started out first being used mainly in restaurants and businesses as a comfort system. The ductless split system allowed the restaurants to free up space and offer a more open area for customers. Since the ductless split system obviously does not have any ducts there is not any wasted space on ventilation networks. Ductless split systems are now becoming more popular in residential areas as well. Homeowners are finally seeing the wonderful benefits the ductless split system have to offer and using them in both new and old homes.
Understanding a Ductless Split System
A ductless split system is very much like heat pumps as in they operate in much of the same way. It is a system that requires no ventilation networks. A system that allows a lot more freedom than all other forms of heating and cooling, and because the system operates ductless there is much more freedom and space in the site of which the system is being used.
A ductless split systems cycles refrigerant between an indoor and outdoor unit such as a heat pump does. The refrigerant that is being shifted from an indoor and outdoor unit changes between a liquid and gaseous state. The system has two sets of coils; it absorbs heat through one set by evaporation and releases heat through another set by condensation.
Heating Mode
When the system is in heating mode the indoor coils act as the condenser and the outdoor coils act as the evaporator. However, when the system is in cooling mode the two coils swap functions, the indoor coils act as the evaporator while the outdoor coils act as the condenser. The indoor layout is where a heat pump and ductless split system begin to differentiate. A standard heat pump has only one indoor unit. It is usually a cabinet that contains the refrigerant coil and a blower fan. The blower fan will move the conditioned air past the refrigerant coil and then into a connected ventilation system. The indoor layout of a ductless split system contains several indoor units with each containing a blower fan and a refrigerant coil.
Each one of the blower fans are mounted on the walls of multiple rooms that connect individually through a power and refrigerant line to an outdoor cabinet. A hole is normally drilled in the wall behind the cabinet that allows all of the lines to exist and reach the outdoor unit. The blower fans on each unit send the conditioned air directly into the rooms without the need of ventilation ducts.
Overall Benefit
The benefits of a ductless split system are very obvious. As stated before they are a very good system for both businesses and a home because they allow you to have a lot more space as a regular heating and cooling system does not. Since the system is ductless there is no wasted space on ventilation networks. A central thermostat also controls the ductless split systems so it makes for easy temperature control. Aside from all the ductless systems being controlled by one thermostat they can also be controlled individually as well. Each person in the house or business can determine what the best temperature is for them and set it him or herself.
A ductless split system can be used for both heating and cooling, so there is no need to have two different types of units. Both heating and cooling options are offered in a ductless split system so there is comfort all year around for everyone.
